Backpack Safety for Kids Kids often have back and neck pain caused by regular use of overstuffed or poorly adjusted backpacks. If your child uses one, follow this advice. 1. Don’t overpack. The pack should never weigh more than 15% of the child’s weight. 2. Wear both shoulder straps especially if pack is carried significant distance. Slinging the pack over one shoulder shifts all the weight to one side causing strain. Wear it over the stronger mid back muscles with both straps 3. Minimize the slack in the straps so the pack doesn’t dangle causing it to bounce and shift. 4. Newer designs use air in the straps. This provides excellent cushion. 5. Any child complaining of persistent back pain should be evaluated by your family chiropractor. This is especially important if the child has a prior history of major/minor injury.
